It’s safe to say that most people will experience some form of job loss in their lifetime. Whether it’s being laid off, fired, or quitting, the emotional and mental challenge can be overwhelming. It’s often been said that job loss is one of the most stressful life events a person can experience. For many, it feels like their world has come crashing down. You truly lost my cushy and stable job, adding value to an array of customers just last week. It’s been such a struggle knowing that income, that life net of the sort, is no longer there and only now reached a realization that my life is mine to forge. Alright then, now moving past my experience and on to the good stuff.

The good news is that there are ways to bounce back after a job loss. You can use this time to discover what you’re truly meant to do in life and leave your mark. I believe and work with me here. We all have a unique purpose and drive intended to be shared with the world. So without coming off corny, this might be the perfect time for you to find your passion. Life is busy enough as it is, and when is the last time you invest some quality time in “YOU,” and I don’t mean watching binge-watching Netflix.

There are a few practical ways to help you get started on your journey of finding your passion. First, start by writing down what you’re good at but, more importantly, what excites you, what makes you lose track of time. From there, try to find activities that align with those aspects. Possibly see if you can carve out a new niche for yourself and be at the forefront in your industry(startups constantly do this). You can also look for clues to your past experiences or interests. For example, if you love baking, you love designing the interior layout of your house. Boom! You might have a knack for interior design. This can be as simple as asking yourself, “What was I doing when I felt the most energized and alive?” Besides running a block and a half because you were late. This is often where your true passions bubble to the service and eventually take shape. It’s also important to note that life isn’t meant to go according to plan, and this is not a bad thing since, for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

You’ll find that this period of self-discovery can be gratifying as life comes full circle in some way or another. Just don’t beat yourself up over time you’ve lost.

So, don’t be discouraged if you’re experiencing a job loss right now. Take this time to reflect on what makes you happy and go out and make it happen. The best is yet to come! Alrighty, Here are a few practical tips to propel you forward and take the world by storm:

1. Failing to plan is planning to fail.

Maintain a routine and be consistent with your goals. Plan your day and week ahead of time, including short-term and long-term goals. Think about it, if you go through your week with no rhyme or reason, what are you setting out to accomplish exactly? Planning will help you stay focused and balance life’s responsibilities while staying motivated to complete what matters in life. It would help if you had all the Rocky-fueled motivation you can get during a time like this.

Start with habits — James Clear. I love this guy! He has an excellent book, “Atomic Habits” that I highly recommend reading if you haven’t already. His book centers around how great leaders can take action in their lives. By consistently following a particular set of habits that positively affect their day-to-day lives. Here is a quick example he gives in the book:

2. YOU are your best investment.

It may seem odd to invest money in yourself, given the circumstances. However, if you can wing it, take the time to invest in yourself. Whether that means getting a manicure, learning how to cook something new, or starting an exercise regimen, you’re worth it, and only your opinion matters here.

Take action on those ideas: Let’s be honest, we all have great ideas, but sometimes they stay as thoughts floating around our head rather than reality! But if you don’t take action on them now, when will they ever come true? This is another excellent example of James Clear’s book “Atomic Habits”. He talks about how if we can do little things consistently over time, such as taking one step by making minor improvements throughout our lives, these simple habits compound into tremendous results over time.

3. Your past does not dictate your future.

Take the time to come to terms with this unsettling news, but do not let it make you feel that you are not capable of a great many things. You have a purpose. You are unique and will accomplish something unbelievable. You have a fantastic story to tell and a lot of great times ahead.

This is where our emotions come into play, which can be your best friend and your worst enemy, depending on how you choose to channel them. You don’t know what will happen tomorrow, so the only thing we truly control in this life is our thoughts today. At times becoming overwhelmed by negative emotions such as anger or sadness. Perhaps over losing one’s job, we must keep things balanced with some light-hearted humor from time to time since laughter is the best medicine after all! Don’t forget about self-care, either. Take a bubble bath. Yes, I wrote bubble bath. They are relaxing and an excellent end to a day. Heck, if sitting in a tub of water isn’t your thing, read a book under a cozy blanket while drinking hot cocoa.

To sum it all up

Don’t beat yourself up over the time you’ve lost

Get organized and stay focused

Take action on those ideas

Remain positive in the face of failure

Your past does not dictate your future.

So, there you have it! There are a few things to think about towards getting started as you journey within the next chapter in your life. Don’t forget that the best is yet to come, and be sure to stay positive throughout the entire process. If you need a friend or just someone to talk to, don’t hesitate to reach out because I’m here for you! Lastly, remember that it’s ok not to have everything figured out right now. We will stumble and make mistakes, but that’s how we learn and become better versions of ourselves. So go out there and take on the world! You got this!
