Mind Over Pandemic: A Humorous Guide to Boosting Your Mental Health

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on us both physically and mentally. As someone who has been spending most of my time at home, I know how easy it can be to slip into a slump. But fear not, my fellow quarantine warriors! I’m here to share some humorous yet practical tips on boosting your mental health during these trying times.

First and foremost, let’s talk about self-care. Now, I’m not talking about self-care where you spend hours getting a massage or soaking in a bubble bath (although those are great, too!). I’m talking about the little things you can do every day to show yourself some love. Maybe it’s taking a few extra minutes in the morning to savor your cup of coffee or tea, or it’s permitting you to nap midday. Whatever it is, ensure you take care of yourself first and foremost.

Next up, let’s talk about staying connected. If you’re anything like me, you’ve spent more time on Zoom calls than you should admit. While these virtual hangouts are great for staying connected, they can also be exhausting. So, why mix things up a bit? How about scheduling a game night with friends over Zoom? Or maybe organizing a virtual book club? The possibilities are endless, so get creative!

Now, let’s talk about seeking professional help. I know it can be scary to reach out for help but trust me, it’s worth it. Whether it’s talking to a therapist or joining a support group, there are resources out there to help you navigate these challenging times. And remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Moving on, let’s talk about media consumption. I’m not saying you should bury your head in the sand and ignore what’s happening. But it’s important to set boundaries when consuming news and social media. It could be limiting yourself to checking the information once a day, or it could be unfollowing that one toxic friend on Facebook. Whatever it is, do what you must to protect your mental health.

Practicing gratitude is another great way to boost your mental health. I know it can be hard to find things to be grateful for during a pandemic but trust me, they’re there. Maybe it’s a beautiful sunset you saw on your evening walk, or perhaps it’s the fact that you finally mastered that sourdough bread recipe. Whatever it is, please take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate it.

Now, let’s talk about focusing on what you can control. I don’t know about you, but I spent much time stressing about things outside my control at the beginning of the pandemic. But the truth is, there’s only so much we can control. So, focus on what you can control, whether establishing a routine or learning a new skill. And remember progress, not perfection.

Spending time in nature is another excellent way to boost your mental health. It can be hard to get outside when you’re cooped up inside all day but trust me, it’s worth it. Whether walking around your neighborhood or hiking a nearby trail, spending time in nature can help reduce stress and improve your mood.

Practicing mindfulness is another excellent way to boost your mental health. I know it can sound a bit woo-woo, but trust me, it works. Whether meditation, yoga, or simply taking a few deep breaths, practicing mindfulness can help reduce stress and improve your overall well-being.

Last but not least, let’s talk about laughter. I believe laughter is the best medicine, and there’s a science to back it up. Laughter can help reduce stress and improve your mood, so don’t be afraid to indulge in comedy during these trying times. Whether watching a funny movie or listening to a comedy podcast, make sure you’re taking the time to laugh every day.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been tough on us, but that doesn’t mean we must let it defeat us. By taking care of ourselves, staying connected, seeking professional help, limiting media consumption, practicing gratitude, focusing on what we can control, spending time in nature, practicing mindfulness, and laughing, we can boost our mental health and come out of this pandemic stronger than ever.
