The Art of Slowing Down: How to Enjoy the Present Moment and the Little Things
So another day is upon you, and you’re feeling your stress levels rising. You don’t remember the last time you took a moment to breathe and be in the present moment — but don’t worry! It happens to the best of us. It is far too easy to become wrapped up in daily to-do’s, and before you know it, you’re on autopilot mode.
It’s time for a change and what better way than to start learning the art of slowing down?
You see, these days, it feels like life is moving at lightning speed, and we forget to enjoy the little moments like a thought moment with your kids or that delicious cup of coffee that you had on that date yesterday. In no way am I comparing magical moments with loved ones to coffee, and I hope you get where I am hoping with this.
The truth is slowing down and embracing the present moment can be incredibly powerful in managing stress, improving our relationships, and allowing us to relish in life’s important moments. So how do we learn to slow down? In this article, I’ll break down the importance of living in the now and provide some creative ways for you to tap into your inner zen.
First off — why should we try to live in the present moment? Well, it turns out that life happens right now! The good stuff and the bad stuff both occur in this very moment and not in any other. Therefore if we spend all our time dwelling on past events or worrying about the future, it can have the power to lead to a negative downward spiral. Let me ask you, do you look forward to doing anything for yourself? Do you have daily self-care rituals or habits that get you excited to do them?
If the answer is no, then let me tell you — it’s time to start! Engaging in activities that pull some excitement and vitality out of life is paramount to slowing down. Here are a few you can try:
- Start a gratitude journal and list three things you’re grateful for each day.
- Take a few minutes to focus on your breathing and just be mindful of the present moment.
- Take a walk outside and take in your surroundings. Notice the colors, sounds, and smells of nature.
- Make yourself a cup of tea or coffee and savor each sip — this can become your daily ritual!
- Last but not least — unplug from technology for an hour or two each day to reconnect with yourself.
Alright, let’s dive into slowing down into more bite-size pieces. Here are some tips for how to enjoy the present moment and the little things:

1. Unplug & Disconnect: Cut yourself off from work emails, social media notifications, and anything else that can suck away your time. Make it a priority to spend time with those close to you without making up our lives as we try desperately to keep up with its pace. But here comes your friendly neighborhood reminder: slow down — there’s more to life than rushing through it!
In fact, slowing down has quite a few benefits beyond just being able to appreciate all those beautiful moments in between. It can help improve mental clarity and increase productivity, increase our connection with others, and reduce stress.
2. Get Outside: Step away from your desk and go outside to take a break in nature. Taking the time to step outside can help you reconnect with yourself and the present moment. Take some deep breaths of fresh air, feel the sun on your skin, and breathe in some nature — it’s refreshing!
3. Put Your Phone Away: Disconnecting from technology can be one of the most powerful ways to slow down. Make sure you’re setting aside at least an hour or two each day to unplug from all digital distractions completely — this will also provide you with more time to focus on what really matters, like relationships, activities that bring joy, and other meaningful experiences.
4. Take Time to Reflect: Make time in your day to sit and reflect on how far you’ve come, what you are grateful for, and the goals that still need some extra TLC. Reflection is a great way to check in with yourself and make sure you’re staying on track with all that life throws at us.
5. Learn Something New: Learning something new can be an incredible way to slow down and get creative! Try picking up a new hobby or activity that interests you — this could be anything from playing a new instrument, trying out yoga, or learning a foreign language — just let your curiosity take over!
Remember, no one is setting expectations for you except the expectations you set for yourself. Being gentle with yourself, slowing down, and enjoying the present moment are part of that! Put your expectations aside and take some time to enjoy those little moments in life.
Now, if you’re anything like me, then my advice to you might be a bit biased. You can always expect the unexpected from me. I believe it’s possible to go full speed still ahead while still taking the time to enjoy all of life’s simple pleasures ✨🧘🏻♀️😃. So here’s hoping this article has inspired you to slow down a little, live in the present moment, and embrace all of life’s beautiful little moments since, at times, they only come around once.
Until next time, may your moments be small but mighty! 💪🏼😉✨
