Parents are the iconic all-stars of their children’s eyes, aren’t they? They are, let’s take a moment to think about this. They can do anything and everything that is expected of them. You and I both know that parenting is a demanding gig, long hours, late nights, early mornings, you name it.

My oh my! If only we could go back in time and tell our 18-year old selves what is coming their way and give the essential guide to taking on the rains of Fatherhood. But I have a good teacher, if I could have been a fly on the wall and taken in all the patience, devotion, guidance, and love that my own parents bestowed upon me during the early years of my life, maybe I could have avoided some of the tricky moments that come with life. But, learning through example and rolling with the punches has given me an experience that is second to none and by far, the most enjoyable experience life has to offer yet.

There is no exact science when it comes to parenting, each child is different. Well, how can I describe parenting? Well, it’s is like having an all-important job interview back to back every day. Everything that you do and say, counts. So it is the daily grind, but then again your kids want to spend time with you which can be a great plus.

But what parents need to remember is that kids don’t come with instructions; they are not ready for society when born and it takes one or two years to fully understand the word “No” in their own language. Being a parent is not easy, but when you see your kid smile or laugh when they do something good. That makes it all worthwhile.

You might be thinking to yourself, what has this got to do with anything? Well, the essence is there are smaller steps that parents can take in order for them to understand their child is developing in the right way. Being a good listener, understanding what they are saying, and knowing when to step in with your own opinion is very important. Parents can make mistakes, but children need guidance and sometimes all it takes is for you to let them know that you are there for them.

Every cliche about kids is true; they grow up so quickly, you blink and they’re gone, and you have to spend the time with them now. But that’s a joy.

I believe (and please feel free to add your thoughts) that parenthood is just a rollercoaster of emotions and you have to give your children the freedom to grow. They will make mistakes, but in time these will become steps forward to being a better person. Life has plenty of twists and turns, and yes parenting is indeed a pretty scenic route with plenty of twists and course adjustments along the way.

There is a great sense of pride and fulfillment, knowing that your kids will someday make a positive impact on society and the world will in turn be a better place with them in it. Heavy though when you think about it. On one hand, parenting does come with its own set of challenges such as sleepless nights (for us parents) and lack of time for yourself and your partner. It can also lead to a feeling of loss as you don’t get the same level of attention from your life partner as before and a sense that a part of your independence is no longer there. Hey, hey this isn’t to get you down, it’s simply an adjustment period and trust me there will be better days ahead. It’s all about communicating and making the time you do have count, planning out date night in advance, activities with the family, you get the idea.

Seeing your child learning something new every day is an amazing feeling. From learning to talk to unintentionally talking back (yes be prepared) to taking their first steps all the way to moving out. It’s a rollercoaster ride and it can rick your emotions, but remember it will all be worth it.

It can be hard raising children in today’s world, but there are more positives than negatives. So really, if you think it all through, parenting isn’t so bad at all, it’s all about making the best of what you have and enjoying every moment.

When I look back at how much patience and poise my parents had with me it’s amazing! Here is the most important advice I can give you: You got this!! All it takes is patience, understanding, love, and guidance. The rest comes naturally over time with experience. Remember, nobody’s perfect; we all make mistakes but it’s how we deal with those mistakes that matters the most. Also, remember that parenting isn’t easy but is definitely worth it! Parenting is an awesome way to grow together as a family and develop priceless bonds with each other.

So parents, take your time with your kids, you are the role model they look up to! And most importantly… enjoy every minute of it.
